ABB today announced an agreement to formally acquire the Shipping businesses of DTN Europe BV and DTN Philippines Inc (" DTN Shipping "), expanding the company's shipping software-related product line. This will make ABB one of the leaders in the ship route optimization market. The DTN Shipping portfolio includes ship route planning software, including applications for route analysis, reporting and modeling. The transaction, financial details of which have not been disclosed, is subject to customary closing conditions and applicable union consultation procedures and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2024.
ABB ship digitization
The acquisition is part of a growing trend for meteorological navigation analytics (or weather-based route analysis) to help ships optimise efficiency and safety. DTN Shipping's business will complement ABB's existing digital offerings, bringing ABB a market-leading application programming interface (API) and expanding the number of ships connected to ABB's network to more than 5,000. ABB and DTN Shipping will work together to ensure high-quality service to customers as always and seamlessly integrate 85 employees, most of whom are based in the Netherlands and the Philippines, into ABB.
DTN Shipping's existing customers will benefit from ABB's expertise in electrification, automation and digital Marine solutions, as well as greater opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
