ABB said it has won an order worth $170 million to build a transmission line between TotalE& PNorgeas' newly developed oil and gas field in the North Sea and the power supply from Norway's grid.
The MartinLinge gas field, located at a depth of 115 metres, has the highest potential for oil and gas reserves in the North Sea and its storage capacity has been identified.
The field will be powered by the world's longest undersea AC transmission line, a 162km high-voltage undersea power cable that will be laid 370 metres below sea level.
"This transmission line will help reduce the environmental impact," said BriceKoch, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "ABB has the manufacturing capabilities, know-how, and knowledge and experience in the field to carry out such a complex project."
Through the onshore grid, the 145 kV high-voltage three-core polymer (polyethylene) insulated submarine cable will provide up to 55 MW of AC power to the MartinLinge gas field.
The cable includes a fiber optic connection to facilitate onshore control facilities.
The scope of the project contracted by ABB includes technical pre-research, design, construction, production and installation for the entire high-voltage cable system.
Production of the cable is expected to begin in 2016.
ABB has signed a partnership agreement with Subsea7, an underwater engineering and subsea equipment services contractor.
