The 9907-166 is part of Woodward's extensive line of equipment. This series is a set of industrial-grade digital control units for steam turbines. These units belong to a family of microprocessors called models 505 and 505E. The 505 and 505E models are a set of control units that correctly operate the turbine's actuators to drive the steam intake valve. The 505 and 505E units are fully programmable to user specifications and can be carried out in the field. They used menu-based software to customize the control functions needed for the turbine.

The unit of the Woodward 505E series is designated 9907-166. It is equipped with a 32-bit microprocessor for controlling industrial-grade steam turbines as well as small units such as utility turbine generators or turbine expanders.

The components of the 9907-166 unit consist of a series of printed circuit boards located in an optional NEMA 4X grading frame designed to be mounted within the system control panel. The NEMA 4X housing exists to protect the 9907-166 device from damage when installed in harsh environments. When a device is equipped with a NEMA 4X frame, the ambient temperature range changes. Without the frame, the device can handle low and high pressure extremes of -25 to 65 degrees Celsius, but when the frame is connected, it changes to a high temperature of 55 degrees Celsius.
