The National Instruments cFP-180x connects directly to Ethernet and automatically negotiates 10 Mb/s or 100 Mb/s communication rates over the network. It includes an RJ-45 connector for connecting 10BaseT and 100BaseTX networks, using standard TCP/ IP-based protocols to maintain full compatibility with existing networks. FieldPoint builds on the standard TCP/IP networking protocol and adds a number of key enhancements, including event-driven communication and publish-subscriber networking. In a publish-subscriber architecture, one or more client PCS subscribe to I/O data from the Compact FieldPoint library.
The network interface monitors the connected I/O modules and publishes I/O data only when the value changes. Analog signals can change value within an optional range, called a dead zone, without causing the system to report data. This event-driven approach, along with data compression, helps you avoid unnecessary Ethernet traffic and maximize communication efficiency. The cFP-180X also includes a standard DB-9 connector for RS232 serial communication. With a direct connection, you can read and write data directly from programs running on your PC or embedded controller. I/O is accessed via a serial interface using a serial protocol called Optomux, just as data is accessed via a classic FieldPoint network interface such as the FP-1000.
The cFP-1804 is an Ethernet/serial backplane commonly used in industrial automation systems. This backplane has multiple functions and application scenarios.

In particular, if a user is using UL-certified I/O modules in conjunction with a Compact FieldPoint system, the entire system must be installed in an appropriately rated, UL-certified NEMA or IP housing. In addition, for optimal cooling efficiency, users should ensure that the Compact FieldPoint system's I/O module vents are located at the top and bottom.
